Vehicle issues – guidance for council tenants

Abandoned vehicles

If the vehicle is on our housing land (e.g. a garage block) please email neighbourhoodhousing@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk with as many details as possible so that we can investigate. If you think the vehicle is stolen please contact the police in the first instance.

Parking issues and vehicle nuisance

Our Neighbourhood Housing team is not generally responsible for managing complaints about parking or vehicle nuisance unless there is a clear breach of tenancy (such as related anti-social behaviour). In the first instance, we would recommend that you speak to the vehicle owner and can offer mediation if both parties are council tenants. If necessary, we will remind our residents to park courteously and ensure that they are not causing an obstruction.

Our Parking Enforcement team investigates parking complaints and can issue a fixed penalty notice if a breach is found. Find out how to report a parking problem.

Our estates have a number of communal parking areas. Unless gated, there are no restrictions on who can park in these and they are first come first served with no allocated parking. We understand that there is high demand for parking in some areas and would ask residents to be courteous to each other. Vehicles marked as SORN must not be parked in any of our communal parking areas and neither should large vehicles such as heavy goods vehicles, caravans or boats. Vehicles parked on our land should have valid tax and MOT and can be reported to the relevant authorities if these are identified.

Where we own garage blocks cars should be parked inside garages so as not to cause an obstruction to other garage users.

Vehicle nuisance should be reported to the police if a crime is being committed such as speeding or nuisance motorbikes. If you feel that safety measures are required in your area to manage issues surrounding vehicles, find out how traffic regulation orders work.

Car repairs

repairing vehicles on the street as part of a vehicle repair business may be an offence.

If the nuisance is being caused by a council tenant please contact us at neighbourhoodasb@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk and we will refer to the correct channels for investigation.

It isn't an offence for a resident to repair their own vehicle. If a nuisance is being caused, we recommend speaking to them first as they may not realise they are affecting you. If the matter continues and the resident is a council tenant, please email neighbourhoodasb@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk and your neighbourhood housing officer will be in touch to discuss the matter further.

If the nuisance is not being caused by a council tenant, find out how to report anti-social behaviour.
